Today, we are one of the oldest and largest AIDS service organizations in the nation. We could not do our work without the support of our committed and vibrant volunteers. Each year, nearly 600 volunteers support CAP in a number of ways, including special events, HIV testing, reception, social media, and internships.

Thank you for considering CAP for your volunteer service! Our goal is to offer volunteer and internship experiences that are fulfilling, meaningful, and most important, help the people we serve. We hope you’ll join our dynamic team and help us reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in our community.

Getting Started

Most volunteers are asked to attend a Volunteer Orientation prior to signing up for their first volunteer shift. Orientation is an excellent way to learn more about CAP’s history, policies, and current volunteer and internship opportunities. Event volunteers may be asked to attend an event-specific training, but they are not required to attend a general Volunteer Orientation.

Volunteer Orientations are held at 5:30pm PST on the 2nd Tuesday of each month via Zoom and are between 60-90 minutes. Please reach out to Gregory McKillop, Volunteer Coordinator, at vcoordinator@capnw.org to RSVP, otherwise the Zoom information will be posted on our website calendar the week before Orientation.

Organizational Volunteer Opportunities

CAP has a number of opportunities for volunteering across our multiple sites in Oregon & SW Washington. These can vary from reception assistance or furniture delivery to photography and food pantry assistance. In general, these volunteer positions are available during standard business hours. While many of our volunteer opportunities have been affected by COVID-19, please check below for some ways that we are still engaging our volunteers. Event Volunteer Opportunities

CAP holds various annual fundraising events; a great way for groups of volunteers to participate. Event volunteers may be asked to attend an event-specific training, but they are not required to attend a general Volunteer Orientation.

Our biggest events of the year are Art Auction and AIDS Walk Northwest, when as many as 200 volunteers come together to show their support! CAP also participates in Portland Pride, Bat ‘n Rouge, World AIDS Day, and many other community events.

Internship Opportunities

CAP offers a variety of unpaid internship opportunities throughout the year that are designed to match an applicant’s goals and skill-set with CAP’s programming. Most internships at CAP may be used toward academic requirements, although you do not need be a student to apply.

In general, internships at CAP require a commitment of 10 to 20 hours per week for a period of 6 to 12 months. The majority of shifts occur during standard business hours, but occasional evening or weekend hours may also be required.

CAP Ambassador Council

CAP + Our House + Prism Health invite you to participate in extending our reach into the community by becoming a member of our Ambassador Council. Your ambassadorship will help raise awareness of CAP + Our House + Prism Health programming and services to help us connect with new clients, patients, volunteers, and supporters on social media and throughout your networks.

CONFIDENTIALITY POLICY

CAP fully supports the right to privacy of individuals who request or receive assistance from this agency. In my capacity as a volunteer with CAP, I agree not to discuss with anyone outside of CAP staff any CAP client, volunteer or donor by name or by any other information which could lead to a person’s identity or health status. I understand that I may be asked to leave CAP for revealing such information. Information I share on my volunteer application or at orientation may be shared, as needed, with other CAP staff as part of the volunteer referral process. This does not include the background investigation form or background check results, which are stored securely in Volunteer Resources. CAP keeps all information, including private health information, confidential in accordance with federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES

I have read the Volunteer Policies & Procedures of CAP. I understand these rights and responsibilities and have had all relevant questions answered by a CAP staff member. I understand that any volunteer who violates CAP’s policies, guidelines, practices and/or standards of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

MEDIA RELEASE

As a volunteer for CAP, I, undersigned, hereby waive and release CAP, their respective affiliates and assigns from any and all rights, claims and causes of action which I, members of my immediate family, and my and their personal representatives, heirs, successors, or assigns could have, whether now or in the future, against CAP and their respective affiliates and assigns arising on account of my participating in any video, photo, commercial, activity, event or promotion sponsored by CAP. REPORTING VOLUNTEER HOURS

I agree to report my hours promptly and accurately each time I volunteer with CAP. I agree to use systems as created by CAP staff, such as sign-in books or online tools, to report my hours. I understand that in addition to purposes of volunteer recognition, the reporting of hours is critical for CAP’s community relations, grant applications and financial health.

HIV BASICS TRAINING

Volunteers are expected to attend a 90-minute HIV Basic Training within approximately two months after their first day (unless alternative arrangements have been made).

ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This Acknowledgement and Certification of Understanding ("Acknowledgement") is to let you know that by submitting an electronic signature, you are providing an electronic mark, that is held to the same standard as a legally binding equivalent of a handwritten signature provided by you. For purposes of the acknowledgement, a digital mark is considered a typed legal First and Last name (legal name may include middle name, initial or suffix) followed by date in the date field. Any document requiring an electronic signature may contain a signature acknowledgment statement provided in the same area requiring the electronic signature.
