As a health-focused organization, we believe that our community's well-being depends not only on our physical and mental health, but also our "civic health": the ability to influence the policies that affect our health and healthcare. That's why CAP is urging all eligible voters to make sure they're registered to vote and cast their ballots in the November 8 election!

This Black History and Black Futures month, we want to highlight the legacy of the new Prism Health Morris building and the historically Black Eliot neighborhood where it is located. The new location will make it possible for Prism Health to expand access to compassionate health care for all and to focus more explicitly on addressing the needs of Black community members and all people of color.

After a nearly 40-year career working in HIV services, Jim Clay is retiring from his position at Cascade AIDS Project. Jim conducted the initial needs assessment and created the program design for CAP's Aging Well Program, a nationally respected and locally beloved initiative that supports the well-being of older adults living with or affected by HIV. Jim has served as Manager of Aging Well Programming for more than six years.

MLK Day is an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and how we can be inspired to act in the present moment against injustice. Several local organizations are hosting events, protests and volunteer opportunities to commemorate the day:

This December, we are proud to honor the beginning of the 40th year of Cascade AIDS Project! Grassroots organizers and LGBTQ+ community members created CAP in 1983 to provide crucial community services in the face of the HIV & AIDS epidemic. Over the 4 decades that followed, our services expanded to include educational outreach, legal advocacy, and primary health care for residents in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is honored annually on November 20th to memorialize the trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people who were murdered in the previous year. TDOR also centers those who are most affected by violence against the trans community, including Black trans women and trans sex workers.

October 26th marks Intersex Awareness Day, which is observed annually around the world to highlight the experiences and human rights issues of intersex people.

The Oregon Legislature has passed first-in-the-nation legislation to clear barriers to emergency HIV prevention drugs. House Bill 2574, which Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) helped write, tackles widespread problems with access to HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), a combination of drugs taken after an HIV exposure to stop infection. PEP has to be taken within 72 hours to be effective.

We are more than excited to announce that, after a thoughtful, comprehensive, nationwide search, we have hired longtime nonprofit leader Paul Lumley to be the new CEO of CAP.  

Each year, June 19th, or Juneteenth, is commemorated as the anniversary of the day in 1865 when enslaved communities in Galveston, Texas learned that the Civil War had ended and that they were free from slavery. Read on for local events in the Portland area to commemorate Juneteenth!

Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Storm DeLarverie remind us of a sometimes painful but simple truth: we all have the power to create change and we must choose to use it.

The health and wellbeing of our patients and clients is our first priority and why our team works so hard. In accordance with federal and state regulations and CDC recommendations, Cascade AIDS Project no longer requires universal masking.
